In extraordinarily simple terms, there are 3 general techniques used. You must be agile enough to switch game plans quickly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This involves assembling a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at a minimum as thick as you can manage, to block in your opponent's checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most suitable strategy at the start of the game. You can build the wall anyplace between your eleven-point and your 2-point and then move it into your home board as the game continues.

The Blitz

This consists of closing your home board as quick as possible while keeping your challenger on the bar. For example, if your challenger tosses an early two and shifts one piece from your one-point to your 3-point and you then roll a 5-5, you will be able to play 6/1 6/1 eight/three eight/three. Your opponent is now in serious difficulty due to the fact that they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have closed half your inside board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have two or higher anchors in your opponent's inner board. (An anchor spot is a position occupied by at a minimum two of your checkers.) It would be employed when you are extremely behind as it greatly improves your chances. The strongest places for anchors are near your opponent's smaller points and either on adjacent points or with one point separating them. Timing is critical for an effectual backgame: at the end of the day, there is no point having 2 nice anchors and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break apart this straight away, while your opposer is getting their pieces home, taking into account that you don't have any other additional checkers to move! In this situation, it's better to have pieces on the bar so that you can preserve your position up until your opponent gives you a chance to hit, so it may be a wonderful idea to attempt and get your competitor to hit them in this situation!
