In extraordinarily general terms, there are three chief strategies used. You must be able to switch techniques instantly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This comprises of assembling a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at least as thick as you are able to achieve, to barricade in your competitor's pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most suitable strategy at the begining of the match. You can build the wall anyplace inbetween your 11-point and your two-point and then move it into your home board as the game progresses.

The Blitz

This involves closing your home board as quickly as as you can while keeping your opposer on the bar. e.g., if your challenger rolls an early 2 and moves one checker from your 1-point to your three-point and you then toss a 5-5, you are able to play 6/1 6/1 eight/three 8/3. Your opposer is then in serious difficulty due to the fact that they have two pieces on the bar and you have locked half your inner board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have 2 or higher pieces in your opponent's inner board. (An anchor spot is a point consisting of at a minimum two of your checkers.) It should be used when you are decidedly behind as it much improves your opportunities. The better locations for anchor spots are close to your competitor's lower points and either on abutting points or with a single point separating them. Timing is critical for a competent backgame: at the end of the day, there's no reason having two nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then required to break apart this straight away, while your challenger is moving their pieces home, taking into account that you do not have other spare checkers to shift! In this case, it's better to have checkers on the bar so that you might preserve your position up until your opposer gives you an opportunity to hit, so it can be a good idea to attempt and get your opposer to hit them in this case!
