In extraordinarily simple terms, there are 3 general game plans employed. You want to be agile enough to switch tactics instantly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This is composed of creating a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at a minimum as thick as you can achieve, to block in the opponent's pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most adequate procedure at the start of the match. You can assemble the wall anyplace inbetween your 11-point and your 2-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the game continues.

The Blitz

This consists of locking your home board as quickly as possible while keeping your challenger on the bar. For example, if your competitor tosses an early two and moves one checker from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then roll a 5-5, you will be able to play six/one 6/1 eight/three 8/3. Your opponent is now in serious dire straits since they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have closed half your home board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have 2 or more checkers in your opponent's home board. (An anchor spot is a position consisting of at a minimum 2 of your pieces.) It needs to be employed when you are decidedly behind as it greatly improves your opportunities. The better areas for anchors are towards your competitor's lower points and also on adjacent points or with a single point in between. Timing is important for an effectual backgame: besides, there's no point having two nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break down this straight away, while your opposer is shifting their pieces home, considering that you don't have any other additional checkers to shift! In this case, it is more tolerable to have checkers on the bar so that you are able to maintain your position up till your opponent gives you a chance to hit, so it will be a wonderful idea to try and get your opponent to get them in this situation!
