In astonishingly general terms, there are three fundamental game plans employed. You need to be able to switch game plans quickly as the action of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This is comprised of creating a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at a minimum as thick as you are able to manage, to block in the opponent's checkers that are on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most acceptable procedure at the begining of the match. You can build the wall anyplace within your 11-point and your two-point and then shift it into your home board as the game advances.

The Blitz

This is composed of locking your home board as fast as as you can while keeping your opposer on the bar. i.e., if your challenger tosses an early two and moves one piece from your one-point to your 3-point and you then toss a 5-5, you are able to play 6/1 six/one 8/3 8/3. Your opposer is now in serious dire straits seeing that they have two pieces on the bar and you have locked half your inside board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have two or higher pieces in your competitor's home board. (An anchor spot is a point occupied by at a minimum 2 of your pieces.) It should be played when you are extremely behind as it much improves your opportunities. The strongest places for anchors are near your competitor's lower points and either on adjacent points or with a single point in between. Timing is crucial for a competent backgame: at the end of the day, there is no point having 2 nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break up this right away, while your opponent is shifting their pieces home, seeing that you do not have any other additional pieces to shift! In this case, it is more favorable to have checkers on the bar so that you might maintain your position up till your competitor provides you a chance to hit, so it will be a great idea to try and get your opposer to hit them in this situation!
