In astonishingly simple terms, there are 3 chief techniques employed. You must be able to hop between strategies instantly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This is comprised of assembling a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at least as deep as you might achieve, to block in your competitor's pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most suitable tactic at the begining of the game. You can create the wall anywhere within your 11-point and your 2-point and then move it into your home board as the game advances.

The Blitz

This is composed of locking your home board as quick as possible while keeping your opposer on the bar. i.e., if your challenger rolls an early two and moves one checker from your 1-point to your three-point and you then toss a five-five, you can play six/one six/one eight/three eight/three. Your opponent is then in big-time calamity seeing that they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have locked half your home board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have two or more pieces in your competitor's inner board. (An anchor is a point consisting of at least 2 of your pieces.) It needs to be employed when you are significantly behind as this strategy much improves your opportunities. The best areas for anchor spots are near your opponent's smaller points and either on abutting points or with one point in between. Timing is important for an effective backgame: besides, there's no reason having 2 nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break apart this straight away, while your opposer is shifting their checkers home, considering that you do not have any other extra checkers to shift! In this situation, it is more favorable to have checkers on the bar so that you might maintain your position up until your opponent provides you an opportunity to hit, so it may be a good idea to attempt and get your challenger to get them in this situation!
