In astonishingly general terms, there are 3 fundamental strategies used. You need to be agile enough to hop between tactics quickly as the action of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This is comprised of building a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at a minimum as deep as you can achieve, to barricade in the competitor's pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most suitable procedure at the begining of the game. You can build the wall anyplace within your 11-point and your two-point and then shift it into your home board as the match advances.

The Blitz

This involves closing your home board as fast as as you can while keeping your competitor on the bar. e.g., if your challenger tosses an early two and moves one piece from your 1-point to your three-point and you then roll a five-five, you will be able to play 6/1 six/one eight/three 8/3. Your competitor is now in big-time difficulty taking into account that they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have locked half your inside board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have 2 or more anchors in your opponent's inner board. (An anchor spot is a position filled by at a minimum 2 of your pieces.) It must be employed when you are significantly behind as this strategy much improves your circumstances. The better areas for anchors are near your competitor's lower points and also on adjacent points or with one point separating them. Timing is important for an effectual backgame: besides, there's no reason having 2 nice anchors and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then forced to dismantle this straight away, while your competitor is shifting their checkers home, considering that you don't have other extra pieces to move! In this case, it's more tolerable to have checkers on the bar so that you might preserve your position until your challenger provides you an opportunity to hit, so it may be an excellent idea to attempt and get your opponent to hit them in this situation!
