The aim of a Backgammon match is to move your chips around the game board and bear them from the board faster than your opposing player who works harder to achieve the same buthowever they move in the opposite direction. Succeeding in a round in Backgammon requires both tactics and luck. How far you can move your checkers is up to the numbers from rolling the dice, and just how you shift your pieces are determined by your overall playing plans. Players use different tactics in the differing stages of a game dependent on your positions and opponent's.

The Running Game Plan

The aim of the Running Game strategy is to entice all your checkers into your home board and get them off as quickly as you can. This plan focuses on the speed of shifting your checkers with no efforts to hit or stop your competitor's pieces. The ideal time to use this technique is when you believe you can move your own checkers quicker than the opponent does: when 1) you have a fewer pieces on the game board; 2) all your chips have moved beyond your opponent's checkers; or 3) the opposing player does not use the hitting or blocking tactic.

The Blocking Game Technique

The primary goal of the blocking strategy, by the title, is to stop your competitor's checkers, temporarily, not worrying about moving your chips rapidly. After you have created the barrier for the opponent's movement with a few pieces, you can shift your other chips rapidly off the board. The player will need to also have a good plan when to withdraw and shift the chips that you employed for the blockade. The game gets interesting when your competitor uses the same blocking strategy.
