In extraordinarily general terms, there are 3 basic plans used. You must be able to switch techniques quickly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This comprises of assembling a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at a minimum as deep as you can manage, to barricade in the competitor's pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most suitable tactic at the start of the game. You can create the wall anyplace inbetween your eleven-point and your two-point and then move it into your home board as the game progresses.

The Blitz

This is comprised of locking your home board as quick as possible while keeping your challenger on the bar. e.g., if your opponent rolls an early 2 and moves one checker from your one-point to your three-point and you then toss a five-five, you will be able to play 6/1 six/one eight/three eight/three. Your opposer is now in big-time difficulty due to the fact that they have two checkers on the bar and you have closed half your inner board!

The Backgame

This plan is where you have 2 or more anchors in your competitor's home board. (An anchor is a position consisting of at a minimum 2 of your pieces.) It should be employed when you are decidedly behind as it much improves your circumstances. The better locations for anchors are towards your competitor's smaller points and also on abutting points or with one point in between. Timing is important for an effectual backgame: besides, there is no reason having 2 nice anchors and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then required to break apart this straight away, while your opposer is shifting their checkers home, owing to the fact that you do not have any other additional checkers to shift! In this case, it's more favorable to have pieces on the bar so that you are able to preserve your position up until your competitor provides you an opportunity to hit, so it can be a good idea to try and get your opposer to get them in this case!
